though paint along the roof line on one short side seems to prevent it from  opening

completely sturdy and sound

Perhaps it has something to do with being a child of the 70s

withsome scattered small dark marks to the surface of the paint

perhaps filled with soaps

European, most likely Scandanavian; I am not an expert on bentwood pantry boxes, but I think the manner in which the end of the wood is secured (known as Svepaskis in Swedish) is indicative of that. There is a carefully (glue) repaired split to the lid, but the green paint and unusual long and low form I think are so lovely, I don't much care. 7 1 2" l x 4 3 8" d x 1 1 4" t.
