I purchased this from a favorite treasure-trove of a shop in Vermont

making me think the sailor who made it had sailed to the far east and was recreating the form

known for his associations with Billy the Kid et al

but I find it super beautiful just as it is—and I find old trunks very evocative things--imagine where this has been and all it has held

Quite heavy and substantial; he'll still be hopping around long after we are all gone. C. 1900 I believe, with a perfect patina to my taste, much of his cold painted gold worn away, but enough remaining to make him glimmer and feel like a precious old gilded thing.
