This particular Brown Bess is slightly smaller than the standard British line issue having a 36 1/2" barrel rather than 39" and the lock has a length of just 6" as opposed to 6 3/4"

It is marked near the cross guard with S A / (Flaming bomb) / 1912 on one side

when lagers A and B from Stalag Luft IV were taken out on their final march

The grips are marked USN but the U and the S have been scraped away as was common when the government released them from military stores
