I think these have quite a bit of age to them--there is craquelure and a wonderful warmth to the varnished surfaces--perhaps with the bookend bases added later

both aesthetically and as a great

but there looks to be some writing

these are shards of ancient glass

and each page separated by tissue of a variety of colors

Very handsome and appearing very at ease, including for the gape between the unbuttoned buttons on his vest. (Looks as if he might reach inside and pull out four Aces! ) I also really like the effect of the slightly wavering arches above and below framing him, as if he were being viewed through a makeshift scope. The fabric draped over the arm of the chair lends a sort of grandmotherly sweetness, too. 3 1 2" x 2 1 2".
