I believe most likely it was made to function as a tea caddy (there are some very fine 19th c example of tea caddies in the form of houses)
She shows a vertical split to the surface wood down her front
Good for hanging from one nail on the wall or just setting somewhere--or use it as a door knocker

I find them both very full of life, and very human, and the handling of the stripes on this shirt really does it for me!
