though I have no idea where this little painting came from

There is a very old ding to the cork on one side

shows a little damage

I’ve always got an eye out for very believably bruised pieces

with a great contrast between the sharp edges of the cages and the soft curves of the chain links

Based on a couple of (super sweet!) hand drawn maps, I believe our Willis likely lived in Port Jefferson in Suffolk County, NY, on the North Shore of Long Island. Wilis name and the year 1883 appears on one page of the sketchook, which the last photo below details. Horses and boats were
