I think it's quite possible that the embroidery is older than the pouch itself--a remnant perhaps

with the mirror-like surface of the daguerreotype making images like this all the more so

6" wide x 5 3/4" t x 5/8" d and signed (carved) with the initials MT on reverse

the perfect board for serving cheese

I'm attracted their objecthood and specifically interested in ones bearing text or graphics that have all sorts of resonances

Baccante dell'Ercolano, Much Handled 19th Century Italian Grand Tour Watercolor wooden board I think it's quite possibleI believe this 19th century Italian gouache watercolor was someone's Grand Tour purchase; some notations in graphite at the top of the paper seem to have recorded the date of purchase and what was paid, but it's a but hard to decipher. (I think maybe the year of purchase was 1895, though I believe the painting is likely a bit older than that.) This allegorical "baccante" (follower of Bacchus) with basket on her head (filled with grapes I believe) and
