John Grant served in the Union Army during the U. S. Civil War. According to the documentation he began his military career with the 97th New York Volunteer Infantry as a Private in March 1862, then later he transferred to the 83rd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment which later became the Ninth Infantry National Guard. He is recorded as a Veteran of the 9th and attended a reunion in 1908. Included in this
