and in an exception to the rule

The reverse was identical for all three versions and the center medallion bore the phrase "Für Verdienst im Kriege" ("for merit in war") and the date "1914"

with the refinished well-retained

This is a lovely early pattern SA Dagger, made by the rare maker Carl Wsthof KG, Gladiatorwerk of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in Western Germany. This is a very rare maker, and this is only the second item we have had from them, with the other being a Fireman's long dress bayonet.
