There have actually been three different 5th Maryland Infantry regiments. The first existed from about 1775 to 1861, when it disbanded and entered confederate service. The second was a Union regiment from the western part of the state, composed almost entirely of German immigrants, which existed only during the Civil War until 1865. The third, to which this shako belonged, was organized in 1867 (hence the date on the
