The distillery was officially founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alex Johnston. Originally it was a farm distillery for its own use. The 1991 Laphroaig matured 23 years in first fill sherry and hogsheads casks and was bottled in a run of 5,000 bottles in 2014.
